ICS 141 Course Policies Fall 2019

This class covers a large amount of material!

It is essential that you don’t fall behind. There will be no time to “catch up later”.

  • We will cover chapters 1 – 7 in the textbook.
  • All classes except review days will have a lecture on new material.
  • You should plan time to work on homework for this class DAILY!

Homework

  • Homework will be assigned for each lecture (See schedule).
    • These will be posted on Laulima.
    • There will be several odd-numbered (and sometimes some even-numbered) exercises assigned for each section.
      • These will not be turned in.
      • You will be expected to know for exams
      • The answers are provided in clickable boxes on the web version of the text.
    • There will be a few even-numbered exercises assigned per section to be turned in.
      • These will be turned in at the beginning of class on the due date and graded.
      • The homeworks will be due generally one week from the assignment date.
    • After each lecture you should do the related assigned problems.
      • Do not put this off, you will be overwhelmed with work.
      • You will not pass this class if you do not do this practice. I guarantee it!!
  •  If you have questions, make sure ask via email or at the beginning of class. Don’t wait because we must move so quickly!!
  • You are encouraged to for study groups to work together on problem sets. However,
    • Write up your own solutions.
    • Remember: 60% of your grade is based on exams which you must take on your own!

Exams

  • There will be three exams:
    • Exam 1 after Chapters 1 & 2
    • Exam 2 after Chapters 3 & 4
    • Final after Chapters 5, 6 & 7
  • Exams are closed-book, closed-note. No calculators or other electronic devices are allowed.
  • One 8 1/2 x 11, hand-written “cheatsheet” of notes is allowed for each exam. This must be turned in with your exam.
  • The final will be cumulative, but weighted towards the last three chapters.
  • The class before each exam will be a review.
  • No makeup exams will be given. If you have a doctor’s note for a missed exam,your grading score percentage will be based on the total possible points for the rest.

Academic Honesty Policy

  • Any student who cheats or plagiarizes on any exam will receive a 0 score, will be asked to withdraw,  and will receive an  “F”  for the course.
  • Group work on homework is acceptable, but each student must turn in their own version. If you turn in someone else’s work, it is cheating and you will receive a 0 score and will also be asked to withdraw.
  • Be honest with yourself and with others.

Attendance and Absences

  • Attendance in class is expected and will be taken each class after the first week.
    • You are allowed to miss 1 class during the semester without penalty or excuse.
    • Any further unexcused (no Dr. note, etc.) absences will result in a 10 point deduction up to 100 points maximum.
  • Students are responsible for all missed work, regardless of the reason for absence. It is the absentee’s responsibility to get all missing notes or materials.

Grade Breakdown:

There are 1,000 points total:

  • Attendance: 100 points – 10%
    • Each absence (except for 1) takes off 10 points, -100 points max.
  • Homeworks: 300 points – 30%.
    • 25 at 12 points each.
  • Midterms: 300 points – 30%
    • Two at 150 points each.
  • Final Exam: 300 points – 30%

There will be some extra credit points available.

  • 10 points for putting your picture in your Laulima profile
  • 5 point “bug bounty” for each error found in the textbook.
  • Proof of completion of the CES end of semester survey will let you make 1 problem of your choice on the final exam extra credit.
  • There may be some bonus problems on other exams.

Letter Grade Distribution:

The grading scale is shifted from the usual to reflect the difficulty of the material.

  • More than 87.5% = A
  • 75.1% – 87.5% = B
  • 62.6% – 75% = C
  • 50.1% – 62.5% = D
  • 50% or less = F

You must get a C in this course to move on to ICS 241 at KCC

 

You must get a B in this course for it to transfer to the UH Manoa ICS program.
